Still miss her everyday. But well... where was I... Uh, so mom was born in 1958, in this very house, right ... over ... there. And about 13 years later, Grandma Stanley died in this very house, right ... over ... there.

Well, yes. Uncle Jakob had to finish raising my mom himself. He was only 20 at the time. ... But, he got married right around then. So, his wife stepped in and took care of mom.

It was only for a few years... they weren’t exactly a “good pairing.” When my mom left home, she took off after that.

-Am I? I hope so. I really want to help you out as much as I can... Well, so mom’s off roaming the world, when in ‘81 she finds herself in the family way. So, she comes back home and Uncle Rus- Uncle Jakob takes her in. Then, ta-da, I’m born... right over there ... I’m kidding, I was born in the hospital.
[The group awkwardly laughs.]

He was doing very well for himself by then, so tried to make sure mom had the best of everything. He had already purchased some of the nearby land and was gonna build mom and I our own place, but my mom, well, mom had... she battled addiction.
RJ

(Off mic)
I’m sorry.
JANE
No, it’s okay. I mean it’s not “okay” but it is okay. ... Uncle Russys, a-hem, Uncle Jakob - got mom into a facility and he took care of me while she was gone. Mom was in and out of rehab until I was 8 or so? ... But then, like a bolt of lightning, she just stopped, completely cleaned up her act. ... Which was perfect timing because Uncle Jakob had been living full time in the camper van... to write, ya know.
TOLEN
(off mic)
Wait! THE camper van? There was an actual camper van? He references it so many times in his work, but I never was sure-

SO, you were living alone in the house... at 8 years old?
TOLEN

More or less. It did make me very self-sufficient.

‘88-89? Somewheres’ in there. That’s when he completely stopped coming to the house. Then in ‘92 mom got a new job a bit aways’ and it didn’t feel right for us to be here anymore, so we left... I didn’t see Uncle Jakob again after that. We wrote each other from time to time, but...
SFX: The wind picks up and a large tree branch slams against the house causing the screen door to unlatch and flap against the door frame.

Oh, yes. ... They say that in the 1960s, a woman escaped the Mendenhall and hanged herself right in one of those trees on the edge of the old property line. ... Right ... over ... there. ... The story goes, that she broke out of the Institute late one night-

And it isn’t. No, that poor thing had to work one town over. There used to be a train station thataway’, it did a lot of business. She was gone from 4 to 4 every night. Sometimes for days at a time.

Some might think that, yes, but I know I thrived and really became my own person, having a lot of time to myself at an early age.

... He was very kind, even as a little boy. When my mom was like 6 years old, someone hit a deer with their car and just left it on the side of the road out there. My mom saw it and started crying, so my uncle goes and checks on the poor thing and discovers this little baby fawn cowering next to her. He plucked that baby up and the two of them hand-fed it until it could go off on it's own. There was a deep kindness to him.

Well, from what I know, he told his publishers as long as they guaranteed to release that last book, he would sign over the rights to all of it.

Oh, no his lawyer Reggie... Lowery - I wanna say? - Called my mom, tried to get her to talk some sense into him when he wanted to sign over the rights, but mom knew it was pointless. But yeah, I practically wrote Uncle Jakob once a week,... he only responded a handful of times. So, I could tell when he was really rattled by something, cuz he would actually take the time to write me. ... I kept them ya know, I kept all his letters.

SFX: Jane scrambles to the kitchen and back, carrying a basket.
JANE (CONT’D)
I wanted to make sure I gave ya this, before you headed out. I noticed how ya really took to my coffee, so I put together a little Thermos for that long drive home.
SFX: Jane hands Chuck a metal Thermos.
CHUCK
Uh, thank you.
JANE
And your hands looked so cold today, so I grabbed a pair of Uncle’s driving gloves.
CHUCK
I can have these?
JANE
Sure can. Go ahead, see if they fit.
SFX: Chuck puts on gloves.
CHUCK
They fit great. Uh, thanks Jane.

No problem, Chuck. I’m glad you like them, they sure seem to like ya’ back.
[They all politely laugh.]
SFX: Chuck heads to exit and opens the door.
CHUCK
I’ll get this stuff out to the car.
SFX: The door closes.
RJ
Where is the Homestead?
JANE
Oh, let me make you a map here. Lord knows it’s not like you can just pull it up on your phone!
RJ
I know, why is that?
SFX: Jane draws a map.
JANE
You see Porter is kinda along this weird ridge, like it's in a hollow...or valley? And on the other side of the ridge is where the cell towers are. And with all this dense forest, forget about it. Really the only place that has wifi is the Herst. It’s this prep school-
AVERY
Oh, we’re aware of Amherst.
JANE
It does have a bit of a reputation. ... There’s dial-up on the computer at the library.
RJ
What’s “dial up”?
JANE
But, the librarian is out of town, so it’s closed for now.
TOLEN
The library is closed because the librarian is out of town?
JANE
Well, Ethel’s the only one with the keys.
AVERY
That’s on brand. - Okay, we seem to be all packed up here.
SFX: Jane hands RJ the map.
JANE
So, here’s a map if you should decide to stay. And feel free to call me whenever you like, I don’t sleep much.

JANE
You be doing me a favor! Save me from having to pay the junk man.
AVERY
All right, we will have a team meeting, and figure out our plans.
JANE
At the very least, go grab a meal at the Homestead. I guarantee you won’t regret it.
AVERY
Maybe we will. Thank you again, Jane. We’ll be in touch.
SFX: Jane suddenly grabs Avery and puts her in a bear hug. Her lav rustles against Avery’s chest.
AVERY (CONT’D)
Oh, this is happening, okay.
JANE
It was so wonderful meeting all of you.
SFX: Jane grabs Tolen in a bear hug next. Her lav rustles against Tolen’s chest.
TOLEN
Uh, yes. Thank you, Jane.
SFX: Jane approaches RJ, and once again gives her a tight hug. Her lav rustles against RJ’s chest.
JANE
I will miss you most of all Scarecrow!
RJ
Awe, Jane you’re the best.
JANE
No you are!
RJ
No you are.
SFX: Jane releases RJ.

Oh, Miss Loretta’s gonna love you.

JANE
Miss Loretta - at the Homestead. She’s Debbie’s mom, they run the place. Get her talking and who knows what will fall outta her mouth. Well, that’s if y’all decide to stay, that is.
RJ
Ha - Okay.
AVERY
Almost forgot, we are gonna need to grab that mic from you.
JANE
Shoot, that’s right, wouldn’t wanna have to make ya come back for it.
SFX: Jane’s mic is abruptly cut off.
MUSIC: [POD THEME]
SFX: The team are the only diners left in the Homestead, so the big room feels a little hollow. Side work is being done by wait staff, the light din of a restaurant closing down for the night flutters throughout the scene. A fire echos from a massive fireplace in the next room.

AVERY/NARRATION
On the outside, the Homestead looks like a simple farm house, but the inside is pretty intense. You are surrounded by dark stained wood paneling and yellowed plaster walls, low exposed-beam ceilings and dim lighting. Pastoral framed paintings hang alongside a massive collection of taxidermy animal heads, whose eyes seem to ... follow you as you pass by. And Jane was not wrong, it was the best meal we’ve ever had.

RJ
I can’t even sit up straight.
CHUCK
I had to unbutton my jeans like 20 minutes ago.
AVERY
Me too.
TOLEN
So... anyone feel like doing a 5 hour drive now?
CHUCK
God no.
AVERY
Well, well, well Chuckles, that’s a big turn around?
CHUCK
It’s called food coma. And they had bottomless blueberry cobbler, Avery. Bottomless!
RJ
And that turkey? They just kept bringing out trays of it.
AVERY
And those damn mashed-tatoes.
RJ
TA-Toes!
CHUCK
OH, the TA-toes!
TOLEN
So, we agree? We stay one night and check out the camper van tomorrow morning? ... Avery?
AVERY
In.
TOLEN
RJ?
RJ
I’m in.
TOLEN
Chuck?
CHUCK
I’m in - as long as we head out early. I wanna get home before dark.
RJ
Okay, grandpa.
CHUCK
Hey, I’m just saying, even with this food coma fast approaching, I have a bad feeling about getting a good night’s sleep here.
TOLEN
Oh why? It seems quaint... and quiet.
CHUCK
And creepy.
AVERY
And haunted?
CHUCK
Don’t start.
RJ
SO haunted.
CHUCK
Screw you both, but YES! And that deer head has been staring at me for like this entire meal.
TOLEN
Guys, don’t be ridiculous.
SFX: Suddenly, the massive grandfather clock in the entry way of the Homestead strikes 9. There is a burst of thunder. The Homestead creaks.
